InQueerChineseCulturesandMobilities,JohnWeibringslighttothegerminationandmovementsofqueerculturesandsocialpracticesintoday’sChinaandSinophoneAsia.WhilemanyscholarsattributeChina’semergentqueerculturestotheneoliberalturnandtheglobalpoliticallandscape,Weirefusestotaketheseassumptionsforgranted.Hefindsthatthevaluesandpitfallsofthedevelopment-inducedmobilitiesandpost-developmentsyndromeshaveconjointlystructuredandsustainedpeople’songoinglongingsandsufferingsunderthedualpressureofcompulsoryfamilismandcompulsorydevelopment.Whileyounggaymenareincreasinglymobilizedintheirdecision-makingtopursuesocioculturalandsocioeconomiccapitaltoaffordaqueerlife,theubiquitousandcompulsorymobilitieshavesignificantlyreshapedandredefinedtoday’squeerkinshipstructure,transnationalculturalnetwork,andsocialstratificationinChinaandcapitalistAsia.WithQueerChineseCulturesandMobilities,WeiinterrogatesthemeaningsandfunctionsofmobilitiesattheforefrontofChina’sinternaltransformationandinternationalexpansionforitsgreatdreamofrevival,whengenderandsexualityhavebecomeincreasinglymobilizedwithgeographical,cultural,andsocialclassmigrationsandmobilizationsbeyondtraditionalandconventionalframeworks,categories,andboundaries.
